Methodology
For this study, we leveraged Vio.com internal data and TripAdvisor review data to generate a ranking of the most haunted cities for hotels and the cities with the most haunted hotels. We gathered an extensive list of hotels available to book from Vio.com, along with the average rating and cost of booking for the night of Halloween.
We also scraped each hotel’s associated reviews from TripAdvisor and text analyzed them to identify the number of haunted and paranormal mentions based on the following terms:
- Haunted terms: haunted, eerie, ghostly, chilling, ominous, cursed, horror, haunting, terror, paranoia, fear
- Paranormal terms: ghost, demon, paranormal, psychic, vampire, werewolf, zombie, ghoul, witch, devil
A hotel within a city was deemed haunted or paranormal if there were at least 10 terms mentioned per 1,000 reviews.
