Revealing how budget travelers plan to stretch their dollars and maximize adventures in 2025
Which Romantic Getaway Destinations Build Bonds or Breed Conflict?
From romantic peaks in Yosemite to breakups in Amsterdam, discover where couples thrive — or take a dive
Romantic getaways provide a chance to reconnect, create memories, and sometimes test the strength of a relationship. But not all trips deliver the same experience. Whether couples choose destinations for love or adventure, manage travel tensions, or set ground rules for smoother trips, their decisions reveal much about modern relationships.
This study examines the dynamics of American couples’ travel, including destinations that deepen connections (or spark conflict), financial disagreements, and the unexpected events that shape their journeys. It also looks at how generational preferences and planning habits influence everything from budgets to daily itineraries. The findings shed light on how couples handle the highs and lows of travel — and what it says about their relationships.
Key Takeaways
- New York, New York, is the most popular travel destination for a couples trip, followed by Las Vegas, Nevada, and Orlando, Florida.
- Couples report that Yosemite, California, helps them feel the most romantically connected, followed by Maui, Hawaii, and Savannah, Georgia.
- Couples report that Amsterdam, Netherlands, is the travel destination most likely to lead to a breakup, followed by Athens, Greece, and Kansas City, Missouri.
- Couples report that Houston, Texas, is the travel destination where they experience the most conflict, followed by Amsterdam, Netherlands, and St. Louis, Missouri.
- 18% of couples plan to take a couples trip before the end of the year, and 57% plan to do so in 2025. The top destinations are Las Vegas, Nevada; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Orlando, Florida.
Where Couples Go and How It Impacts Connection
Planning a romantic getaway comes with a lot of expectations — whether it’s reigniting the spark, sharing unforgettable experiences, or simply escaping the daily grind. But which destinations draw the most couples? And, more importantly, which delivers the romantic connection they’re hoping for?
When it comes to sheer popularity, New York City took the crown as the top destination for couples, followed by Las Vegas, Nevada, and Orlando, Florida. Each offers its own romantic flair, from Broadway shows to high-stakes excitement and theme park thrills. Beaches, however, remain the universal favorite for couples — nothing says “romance” like sunsets over the ocean and sand between your toes.
Generational preferences added an interesting twist. Gen Z favored Los Angeles, California, for its trendy, sun-soaked vibe. Millennials were loyal to New York City’s irresistible charm, while Gen X found their romantic rhythm in the neon glow of Las Vegas.
While certain cities win in popularity, others excel at bringing couples closer. Yosemite, California, was rated the best destination for feeling romantically connected, with its breathtaking natural beauty setting the stage for love. Maui, Hawaii, and Savannah, Georgia, followed closely behind.
Generational standouts for connection varied widely. Gen Z felt the love in Cancun, Mexico, while millennials gravitated toward Yosemite’s awe-inspiring landscapes. Meanwhile, Gen X ventured farther afield, citing Tokyo, Japan, as the top destination for romantic bonding.
Nature proved to be the ultimate love booster: 90% of couples felt more connected in mountainous or nature-oriented destinations. And the stakes for these trips were high: 82% of couples expected a romantic getaway to improve their relationship, while 61% said bucket-list destinations lived up to the hype.
Love on the Rocks: Destinations That Test Relationships
Romantic getaways are often seen as the perfect opportunity to strengthen bonds — but not every trip ends with hearts and roses. For some couples, certain destinations can spark arguments or even spell the end of the relationship. So, which places are most likely to challenge lovebirds?
Amsterdam, Netherlands, was the destination most likely to lead to a breakup, followed by Athens, Greece, and Kansas City, Missouri. Nearly 1 in 10 couples who traveled to Amsterdam parted ways during their trip. Could it be a minefield for romance? More broadly, 1 in 20 couples (5%) reported breaking up with their partner on a couples getaway. Even the most idyllic vacations aren’t immune to relationship drama.
Conflict — while not always leading to a breakup — was most often reported by love birds visiting Houston, Texas. Amsterdam again earned the second spot, followed by St. Louis, Missouri. Gen Z couples were the likeliest to experience friction (the bad kind) in Amsterdam, while millennials’ responses pointed to Jacksonville, Florida, as the most troubling spot. St. Louis, Missouri, was the conflict capital among Gen X couples.
City destinations appeared to be the most conflict-prone overall — whether due to high energy, busy schedules, or simply clashing travel styles. More than 1 in 10 (13%) who traveled to a city together reported high levels of conflict, more than any other type of destination. For couples seeking a smoother ride, it might be worth considering quieter locales for their next escape.
Money was the leading source of conflict on couples trips, with 36% of travelers citing budget disagreements as their top issue. Activity levels (30%) and itinerary planning (28%) followed close behind. Generational differences revealed unique pain points:
- Gen X couples were most likely to argue about spending limits (38%).
- Millennials clashed over how much to relax (25%) or how well they communicated (23%).
- Gen Z couples struggled with oversleeping (29%) and social media use (21%).
Work distractions also disrupted the romance for some travelers, with 18% citing it as a reason for disagreement. 1 in 10 Americans admitted to bringing work on a romantic trip either “often” or “always” (Gen Z led the pack here at 13%). Men (14%) were twice as likely as women (7%) to blur the lines between love and labor, while 11% of tech employees couldn’t leave their jobs behind.
Disagreements over money extended beyond spending habits. Nearly 2 in 5 couples (39%) admitted to having mismatched “budget mentalities,” with splurging couples spending 40% more ($2,910) than their more frugal counterparts ($2,077). On average, couples allocated $2,287 for a romantic getaway, but generational budgets varied widely. Gen Z couples spent the least ($2,027), while Gen X spared no expense with the highest average budget ($2,732).
Unexpected challenges, like bad weather and missed flights, tested relationships in different ways. While 24% of couples claimed these mishaps actually strengthened their bond, 11% reported that they caused significant or lasting tension. Gen Z was the most likely to find silver linings in chaos, with 29% saying such events brought them closer. For others, however, those “adventurous” hiccups likely just led to more arguments.
Future Getaways and Golden Travel Rules to Live By
For couples, planning the perfect trip is just as important as the destination itself. With many already mapping out their next romantic escape, certain locations are standing out as go-to spots — and specific travel “golden rules” are helping couples navigate the journey with fewer bumps along the way.
Despite bumpy roads, romantic travel isn’t slowing down anytime soon. While 18% of couples plan to squeeze in a trip before the end of this year, 57% have their sights set on 2025 for their next big getaway. As for where they’re heading, Las Vegas, Nevada, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Orlando, Florida, were the top future travel destinations on couples’ lists.
Making a trip successful takes more than just picking the right destination. Couples agreed on a few key golden rules to ensure smooth sailing:
- Shared decision-making
- Flexible itineraries
- Pre-trip planning sessions
When identifying all the golden rules they set, Gen Z couples were particularly structured in their approach, leading all generations in emphasizing pre-trip planning (42%). They were also the most likely to prioritize budget limits (37%), quality sleep (34%), daily check-ins (35%), and — perhaps most impressively — no work interruptions (31%).
Is Traveling Together the Ultimate Relationship Test?
Whether couples connect in Yosemite’s serene landscapes or clash over social scrolling in Amsterdam, each journey tells a story of compromise, connection, and sometimes conflict. From setting clear golden rules to finding joy in unexpected challenges, couples prove that traveling together is as much about teamwork as it is about romance. While no trip is perfect, the effort to make memories, navigate obstacles, and share experiences reflects what these getaways are really about: building stronger bonds.
